## What does an employee cost in each country?

At the same salary in dollars, Mexico City has the lowest statutory on-cost before profit sharing and Brazil the highest. Calculated by Nearshorers with each country's 2026 rules: a first-year employee in the lowest risk class in Mexico City, a Colombian employer covered by the art. 114-1 exemption, a Brazilian company in the regular tax regime with a 1% work-accident rate, and a large Argentine services company at the 20.40% rate, at the exchange rates of late October 2026:[27][28][29][30]

| Monthly salary | Mexico City | Colombia | Brazil | Argentina |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USD 2,500 | USD 3,312, 32.5% on top, before profit sharing | USD 3,459, 38.4% on top | USD 3,653, 46.1% on top | USD 3,447, 37.9% on top |
| USD 4,000 | USD 5,280, 32.0% on top, before profit sharing | USD 5,534, 38.4% on top | USD 5,844, 46.1% on top | USD 5,516, 37.9% on top |

What each on-cost includes:

- **Mexico:** the IMSS social security branches,[1] 5% for the INFONAVIT housing fund, the aguinaldo and vacation premium,[13] and Mexico City's 4% payroll tax,[45] with profit sharing paid once a year on top.[34]
- **Colombia:** 12% for pension,[46] occupational-risk insurance,[47] 4% for the family compensation fund,[48] and the accrued service bonus, severance savings with interest and vacation;[2] the health, SENA and ICBF levies are waived below 10 minimum wages for employers that file income tax.[49]
- **Brazil:** 20% social security with no ceiling and 1% to 3% work-accident insurance,[3] 2.5% salário-educação[50] and the 8% FGTS deposit,[16] on salary plus the 13th salary and the vacation bonus; other third-party contributions set by activity code are not included.
- **Argentina:** 20.40% social security with no ceiling, or 18% for companies with an SME certificate,[4] and 6% for the health fund,[51] on salary plus the SAC and the extra vacation pay;[15] the occupational-risk insurance premium is quoted by each insurer and is not included.[52]

The ranking can move. Mexico's employer old-age contribution above 4 UMA rises from 7.513% in 2026 to 11.875% in 2030;[53][1] Colombian salaries from 10 minimum wages lose the exemption and cost about 52% on top;[49] a 3% work-accident rate takes Brazil to 48.3%;[3] and in Argentina the 18% rate gives 35.3%, while eligible new hires under the RIFL incentive cost about 22% on top for 48 months (all calculated).[54] The cost guides for [Mexico](https://nearshorers.com/guides/employee-cost-mexico), [Colombia](https://nearshorers.com/guides/employee-cost-colombia), [Brazil](https://nearshorers.com/guides/employee-cost-brazil) and [Argentina](https://nearshorers.com/guides/employee-cost-argentina) show the line-by-line math.

## How much does a dismissal without cause cost?

Each country prices it differently. For an employee on USD 2,500 a month dismissed without cause after three years, calculated by Nearshorers on base salary, before the accrued vacation and proportional year-end bonus that every exit pays:

| Country | Cost | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Mexico | USD 8,707 | Three months' salary and a seniority premium of 12 days a year on a salary capped at twice the minimum wage; 20 days a year more, USD 5,000, where article 49 applies, and back pay if the employer loses in court[13][31] |
| Colombia | USD 5,833 | 70 days' salary: 30 for the first year and 20 for each additional year[2] |
| Brazil | At least USD 5,700 | A fine of 40% of the FGTS deposits, about USD 3,200, and 30 days' notice, plus 3 days of notice per year of service[16][55] |
| Argentina | USD 10,000 | Three months' severance and one month's notice, with no collective-agreement cap applying[15] |

The procedure matters as much as the amount. In Mexico, a dismissal without a written notice stating the cause is presumed unjustified, and any settlement must be ratified before a conciliation center or labor court.[13] In Colombia, the employer must prove it paid social security for the last three months, or the termination has no effect.[2] In Brazil, final pay is due within 10 days, with a penalty of one month's salary if late.[32] In Argentina, severance is the only compensation for dismissal without cause, and no notice is owed during the six-month probation.[15]

## How do working hours and time zones compare?

Three of the four have cut or are cutting the workweek. Colombia completed its cut to 42 hours on July 15, 2026.[9] Brazil's Constitutional Amendment 141 sets 42 hours from mid-December 2026 and 40 from mid-December 2027, with two paid rest days and no pay cut.[10] Mexico cuts two hours each January until it reaches 40 in 2030.[11] Argentina keeps 8 hours a day or 48 a week,[12] though collective agreements can now average hours and use hours banks.[15]

Night work starts at 7 p.m. in Colombia,[9] 8 p.m. in Mexico,[31] 9 p.m. in Argentina[12] and 10 p.m. in Brazil.[32] None of the four uses daylight saving time:

| City | Offset | During US daylight saving time | During US standard time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mexico City | UTC−6 | 2 hours behind New York, 1 ahead of Los Angeles | 1 hour behind New York, 2 ahead of Los Angeles |
| Bogotá | UTC−5 | 1 hour behind New York, 2 ahead of Los Angeles | Same as New York, 3 ahead of Los Angeles |
| São Paulo and Buenos Aires | UTC−3 | 1 hour ahead of New York, 4 ahead of Los Angeles | 2 hours ahead of New York, 5 ahead of Los Angeles |

In the US winter, a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific schedule ends at 7 p.m. in Mexico City, 8 p.m. in Bogotá and 10 p.m. in São Paulo and Buenos Aires, so its last hour counts as night work in Colombia and Argentina (calculated).

## How do employer-of-record and contractor rules compare?

All four let a third party employ people who work for you, under different conditions:

| Country | Employer of record or staffing | Liability of the client |
|---|---|---|
| Mexico | Only specialized services outside the client's corporate purpose, from a provider registered in REPSE[13] | Jointly liable if the provider fails its workers[13] |
| Colombia | Temporary-staffing companies only for occasional work, replacements and peaks of up to six months plus six[35] | Outside those cases the user company can be declared the employer[9] |
| Brazil | Outsourcing of any activity, by a provider with share capital matched to its headcount[56] | Secondarily liable for the period of the services[56] |
| Argentina | Workers are direct employees of whoever registers them[15] | Jointly liable only for the period it used them[15] |

All four also look past a contract's label. Mexico and Colombia presume that personal work is employment;[13][2] Brazil applies a test of personal, non-occasional, subordinated and paid work;[32] and Argentina presumes employment for dependent services unless the provider invoices or is paid through a bank, a presumption the worker can still overcome with other evidence.[15]

For contractors, each country has a light regime for individuals and exempts services exported to a US client from its sales tax, with conditions:

| Country | Regime for individual contractors | Sales tax on services exported to the US |
|---|---|---|
| Mexico | RESICO, for income up to MXN 3.5 million a year, taxed at 1% to 2.5%[57] | 0% VAT, with extra conditions for IT services[58] |
| Colombia | Not responsible for VAT below 3,500 UVT a year, COP 183.3 million in 2026; optional SIMPLE regime[59][60] | Exempt from VAT if used exclusively abroad[61] |
| Brazil | MEI up to BRL 81,000 of revenue in 2026; Simples Nacional up to BRL 4.8 million[62][63] | No ISS, and no PIS or COFINS when paid in foreign currency[64][65] |
| Argentina | Monotributo up to ARS 126.6 million a year, about USD 82,000[66] | No VAT, invoiced with a Factura E[67][68] |

How the money arrives differs too. Argentine individuals must bring service income into a dollar account in their own name at a local bank within 20 business days, but do not have to convert it to pesos.[69] In Colombia, payments for services do not have to go through the regulated exchange market;[70] Brazil's IOF tax on exchanging export receipts is zero;[71] and Mexico's peso has floated freely since 1995.[72] For employees, Mexico requires cash wages in legal tender[31] and Brazil in reais,[32] Colombia allows a salary agreed in dollars that the employee can demand in pesos at the official rate,[2] and Argentina has allowed salaries in foreign currency since March 2026.[15]

## How do the labor markets compare?

National statistics offices use different definitions and periods, so read the unemployment, informality and formal-jobs rows as orders of magnitude.

## Where is English strongest?

Argentina leads by a wide margin in the EF English Proficiency Index 2025: 575 and 26th of 123, first in Latin America, against 482 for Brazil (75th), 480 for Colombia (76th) and 440 for Mexico (103rd), with a global average of 488.[17][18][19][20] Buenos Aires scores 594.[17] City scores narrow the gap elsewhere: Monterrey (532) and Guadalajara (511) in Mexico, and Bucaramanga (518), Medellín (516) and Bogotá (513) in Colombia, while Mexico City scores 428.[93][19] By job function, respondents working in IT scored 559 in Mexico and 551 in Brazil.[20][18] The [English proficiency guide](https://nearshorers.com/guides/english-proficiency-latin-america) compares all of Latin America.

## How do data protection rules compare?

- **Mexico** replaced its private-sector data protection law on March 20, 2025; international transfers can take place without consent in listed cases, such as within the same corporate group or to perform a contract in the data subject's interest.[94]
- **Colombia** prohibits transfers to countries without adequate protection unless an exception applies,[95] and its regulator's list of adequate countries includes the United States.[96]
- **Brazil** requires a listed basis for any international transfer; with no adequacy decision for the United States, companies rely on the regulator's standard contractual clauses, mandatory without changes since August 23, 2025.[97][98]
- **Argentina** prohibits transfers to countries without adequate protection, and the United States is not on its list, so transfers rely on consent or the regulator's model clauses.[99][100]

## Which country fits which hire?

- **US West Coast hours:** Mexico City is one or two hours ahead of Los Angeles; São Paulo and Buenos Aires are four or five.

At the same salary in dollars, Mexico City has the lowest statutory on-cost before profit sharing, about 32% to 33%, followed by Argentina and Colombia at about 38% and Brazil at about 46%. In our 2026 calculation a USD 2,500 monthly salary costs about USD 3,312 a month in Mexico City, USD 3,447 in Argentina, USD 3,459 in Colombia and USD 3,653 in Brazil.

### Which of the four countries has the best English?

Argentina, with a score of 575 in the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, 26th of 123 and first in Latin America. Brazil scores 482, Colombia 480 and Mexico 440, and Buenos Aires scores 594.

### Which country is best for working US West Coast hours?

Mexico. Mexico City keeps UTC−6 all year, one hour ahead of Los Angeles during US daylight saving time and two in winter. Colombia is two or three hours ahead, and São Paulo and Buenos Aires four or five.

### Can I use an employer of record in all four countries?

Yes, under different rules. Mexico allows it only for specialized services from a provider registered in REPSE, Colombia limits temporary staffing to occasional work and short peaks, Brazil allows outsourcing of any activity, and Argentina treats workers as employees of whoever registers them.

### Where is dismissal most expensive?

In our calculation for an employee on USD 2,500 a month after three years, Argentina is highest at about USD 10,000, then Mexico at about USD 8,707 before any back pay, Colombia at USD 5,833 and Brazil at about USD 5,700 plus extra days of notice.

### Does the US have tax treaties with these countries?
